I moved to Richmond in the Summer of 2021 and have had time to explore different Richmond engagement session locations. I’m loving RVA for its wide variety of scenery. Within a relatively short distance, you have location options for garden scenery, cityscapes, landscapes, and the classic historic charm of Richmond! And in no particular order, keep reading to view the different locations!
If you’re from Richmond, you know the charm of The Fan- this is my favorite place to walk on a nice day. Many of the streets are lined with beautiful homes that are perfect for your session. I see The Fan being a favorable engagement session location if you’re from Richmond! The Fan pairs well with cocktail or chic casual attire! There are some streets in The Fan, like Monument that pair nicely with a formal dress and suit! This may be one of my favorite Richmond engagement session locations.
In 2019 I shot a wedding at The Virginia House and always enjoy shooting that this upscale location. The Virginia House is a hidden gem located not too far from the heart of the city. This location is perfect for a couple wanting an elegant garden engagement session with a European flair. The architecture and gardens of The Virginia House are unmatched. You do have to get a permit to shoot here- I can help you with this.
VMFA is another well-known spot to RVA locals. Fridays especially, you can find people picnicking on the lawn! Like The Fan, I see VMFA being a favorable location for couples local to Richmond. I like the variety the VMFA has to offer. The back has a beautiful awning that feels more elegant and pairs nicely with formal attire. This is also my go-to rain location!
Maymont is the most popular location for Richmond engagement sessions! Maymont has a lot to offer every season and is constantly changing making each session unique to you! If you’re looking for a garden-inspired engagement session, Maymont or The Virginia House is for you! Make sure to park by the Italian Garden located off of Hampton Steet.
Belle Isle is perfect for those wanting a background that encompasses nature. This is also an iconic location in Richmond and a beautiful spot to see the river! That being said, Belle Isle is one of the trickier locations because it’s so popular- it can be difficult to avoid people in the background. I would recommend a sunrise session and avoid doing a session on a Friday or weekend.
Libby Hill is one of the best places to go get photos with a cityscape! Like Belle Isle, it can be hard to avoid the crowds so it’s best to stick doing a session on a weekday- other than Friday. I love the way Libby Hill glows during sunset!
Kelly and Colin choose Downtown Richmond for their engagement session. We did their session at sunrise to avoid crowds. We mapped out a route that included some of the city but also the charming cobblestone streets of Downtown Richmond.
The Estate at River Run is a luxurious estate located along the river 30 minutes northwest of Richmond. This Estate provides an elegant engagement session location with an upscale terrace, garden pathways, and the option for formal portraits indoors in the ballroom! I haven’t photographed a session yet at The Estate at River Run, but maybe you’ll be my first!!
